Gombe declares end to cholera as 132 patients recover

No fewer than 132 residents of Yalmatu Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State have recovered from cholera.

According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, Yalmatu Deba LGA is now free of possible community spread of the infection.

Dahiru revealed that the declaration of an end to the infection was in line with guidelines by the World Health Organisation and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

The commissioner disclosed this during a media briefing at the Ministry of Health.

He said, “Within seven days, 132 cases were identified, treated and managed based on the standard protocol, without death.

“From 27th March to date, no new case has been reported over 10 days, thereby signifying an end to the outbreak.”

While lauding the efforts of Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, Dahiru enumerated measures put in place to forestall future outbreak.

“These include surveillance and active case search in the community; setting up of a treatment and dehydration centre where patients were managed freely; environmental decontamination and health education, as well as community sensitisation, among others.

“We implore residents to ensure good personal hygiene, observe environmental sanitation, drink potable water and eat hygienically prepared food.

“Surveillance team of the ministry will continue to go round to increase awareness and carry out possible measures to prevent future outbreak,” Dahiru said.
