Former Manchester United and England defender Chris Smalling was robbed at gunpoint while he, his wife and two-year-old son were in their Italian home.

While club side Roma saw off Ajax to book their place in the Europa League semi-finals, Smalling endured a ‘night of terror’ as his house was targeted by armed burglars, according to reports in the Italian press.

The centre-back was not involved on Thursday night’s game at home against the Dutch giants as he is currently sidelined with a knee injury, so would have watched from home as his teammates booked a meeting against old club United in the last four.

But scenes of celebration turned to terror during the night as the footballer was awoken by three hooded men who broke into his house in the heart of Rome.

Italian police have confirmed they are searching for three robbers who are said to have woken up Smalling by gunpoint and forced him to open his personal safe.

The reports claim they stole expensive Rolex watches, jewellery and other precious items.

Smalling’s wife contacted the police at around 5am on Friday morning and officers arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.
