Erica Nlewedim: The rise of Nigeria’s star girl

Reality television star, Erica Nlewedim, has surely come a long way before becoming the Star Girl and queen of Elites, as her fans are called. Although she had been acting and modelling, she caught her big break when she became a contestant on the reality television show, Big Brother Naija; Lockdown edition 2020.

Born Nlewedim Ngozi Ugomma Erica, she had her secondary school education at Victory Grammar School, Lagos and was later moved to Command Secondary School, Ikeja. Erica later graduated from Covenant University where she bagged a degree in Business Administration.

n 2014, she participated in the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant where she became the MBGN Miss Photogenic award. The competition made her gain massive recognition.

Her acting career began in 2015 with a lead role in the film, Secrets and Scandals. She later starred in the television series, Royal Castle for three seasons and My Flatmates. She featured in a thriller; Once Upon A Night, where she played a supporting character, and other movies like The Paternity Deal, Being Farouk, Dead Rites, Fractured, Win or Lose, Made in heaven and a host of others. She further played a supporting role in the blockbuster movie, Hire A Woman.

To become a better actress, Erica studied Acting for Film at the Met Film School, London, in 2019.

On July 19, 2020, she launched her brand on one of Nigeria’s biggest reality television show, Big Brother Naija. Upon entering the house, she told the host of the show, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, that she had no strategy to win the contest but she would be herself all through the show.

Soon after she got into the house she became a favourite among viewers and her fanbase began to grow. Also, her beauty caught the eye of fellow contestants, Kiddwaya and Laycon, hence, a love triangle began.

All through the show, she made it known that she chose Kiddwaya to be her love interest despite Laycon’s optimism. True to her words, she was herself on the show, sadly, she let her anger get the best of her.

On September 6, 2020, she got disqualified from the BBNaija show after she got a third strike. Her strikes were for using vile words on fellow housemates, verbally abusing Laycon and disrespecting the HoH lounge. At the time, she had already garnered a large fanbase who gave her the nickname, Star Girl.

Her hardcore fans, Elites, believed that she was the star of the show and despite her disqualification, they still helped her to smile to the bank through a fundraiser.

They opened a GoFundME in her name. Within three hours of opening the Gofund me, Nigerians and fans of Erica already contributed as much as $9,000 for her. She later got thousands of dollars from the fundraiser.

In separate interviews both Kiddwaya and Erica noted that they would still remain friends and till date their friendship seems intact as the duo often tease themselves and fans on social media.

However, her relationship with Laycon, winner of the reality television show, seems strained.

Ever since she was booted out of the show, she has achieved various feats. Erica’s first got signed up to be managed by Paul Okoye’s Upfront and Personal Management Company.

Later, she announced her ambassadorial deal with luxury hair, Kukushair. Soon after, she bagged premium dual deals as the face and ambassador of Legend Extra Stout and Star Radler of the Nigerian Breweries Company. She also got signed to Deshapeables, a weight loss company.
