Arsenal legends have urged Mikel Arteta to keep in-form Alexandre Lacazette up-front and make him captain for the rest of the season, instead of Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.

Lacazette scored twice as the Gunners sailed through to a European semi-final on Thursday night, and both Ray Parlour and Kevin Campbell agree they have looked a ‘more balanced’ team without Aubameyang in recent games.

“At the moment they’re playing like they don’t really need him in the side,” Invincibles great Parlour said on Friday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.

“I think they’re more balanced, if I’m being honest. The balance with the three there is good at the moment and Lacazette is leading the line well.

“Look, he might want to go at the end of the season, I don’t know, but he’s certainly putting a good job in at the moment to say, ‘why am I going, why can’t I stay?’”

Former Gunners striker Campbell agrees, and believes Arteta may well decide to keep Lacazette in his starting XI and hand him the armband for the remainder of the campaign.

“Lacazette has been playing really well,” he told Parlour and talkSPORT host Alan Brazil.

“Whenever Arsenal play well, you tend to find Lacazette plays well at the No.9 position, he brings other people into the game.

“Get young legs around him and we look a different team.

“I don’t see why Lacazette shouldn’t keep playing there for the rest of the season.

“It’s all about form and we’re at the business end of the season now. Lacazette is the form guy, he’s scored four goals in two games and he seems to be the one who really steps up to lead this team.”
