Andy Cole says Man United should SELL Jesse Lingard this summer despite sensational West Ham form… as it is right thing for club and player

Andy Cole reckons a move away from Manchester United this summer for Jesse Lingard would be the best thing for all parties.

The attacking midfielder has been in sensational form since his loan switch to West Ham in January.

Another two goals in a 3-2 win over Leicester City has put the Hammers into the top four as they hunt Champions League qualification.

The 28-year-old now has eight goals and three assists in just nine matches.

The performance against the Foxes came in front of England manager Gareth Southgate, who will also be taking note ahead of Euro 2020.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is another who will be taking an interest, with Gary Neville suggesting he will want Lingard back next season.

But, according to another United legend – Andy Cole – Lingard’s time at Old Trafford should be up.

“The opportunity for him to go on loan to West Ham came at a fantastic time. He’s taken it with both hands,” Cole told The Sunday Session.

“Now Manchester United have a decision to make. Take him back or sell him in the summer for a little bit more money than was expected?

“I think if I was Manchester United, I would move him on. And if I was Jesse I would want to go and play games. Definitely.”

And Arsenal hero Perry Groves backed Cole’s comments.

The former winger insisted that even if the turnaround in his fortunes is beyond belief, he will still only be a backup to Bruno Fernandes.

“He knows if he goes back to Man United he’s a squad player. That’s it,” added Groves.

“This is a bonus for him really because he wanted to prove that he was still good enough, hungry enough, and fit enough to play in the Premier League. That’s done and dusted.

“To get himself back in the England squad. If you’d told him that at the beginning of February, ‘by the way, there is every chance you can be in the Euros squad’, he’d have gone ‘nah, no chance’.”

Lingard was recently recalled by England boss Southgate.

He was a key part of the squad which reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals but had been omitted for two years after falling out of favour for United.

Now though he is a shoo-in for the Euros, reckons Cole.

He added: “Ultimately when you come to this stage of the season you have got to take the players in form.

“I don’t really care about, ‘oh, yeah, he, six months ago was fantastic’, I’m talking about now because the tournament is going to be when the season finishes in, what, May? Three weeks later. You have got to take the players in form and if Jesse continues this then why not?”
